BOG-INS - SAN CARLOS TRIPS 1

Our first overnight trip was on 31st December 1983 to Darwin, Goose Green and San Carlos. We stayed at the Goose Green military camp overnight. Martin R, Jim L, Tony R, George L, Frank S, Dave O, James M and Wickham were on the trip.

We got onto the wrong track beyond Darwin the next day, New Year's Day. Dave O, who should have been the most experienced driver on "camp" because he was in the Falkland Islands in 1982, was the first to get bogged.

Dave is the one in the coloured cap just standing around doing nothing while we all got him out.

He said "Looks like a chinook job, Martin". Martin R sighed and said "Oh No, this is serious".

Two landrovers were needed to pull him out.

We wanted to go far beyond San Carlos on 21st January 1984 and possibly do a round-the-island trip but James M managed to crack a brake drum on my landrover after getting bogged near Hell's Kitchen. The next morning at the San Carlos military camp it jammed and the wheel wouldn't turn. We spent ages getting bolt heads out that had broken off inside the drum and covering the hole with tape temporarily.

Alan W succeeded in getting bogged three times in quick succession towards Third Corral Mountains, which delayed us further. V-signs don't help, Alan! All photos are definitely of LR19. They're not all of the same bog-in, the grass pattern is different.

Later, on Third Corral Mountains near Verde House, we decided we had only done the easy bit to San Carlos that we had done before and there was no chance of doing the rest of the trip over the middle of the island, around to Stanley and home in the rest of the day.
